Sneed B. Collard III has written more than forty-five children's books about science, nature, and the environment. They include award-winning picture books such as Beaks!, Leaving Home, and The Deep-Sea Floor, riveting middle-grade books like A Whale Biologist at Work and The Prairie Builders; and widely-acclaimed books for young adults such as Alien Invaders-The Continuing Threat of Exotic Species and Monteverde-Science and Scientists in a Costa Rican Cloud Forest.
His books are regularly selected as CBC/NSTA Outstanding Science Trade Books, IRA Teacher's Choices Books, Junior Library Guild Selections, and other honors. In addition to his ground-breaking science books, Sneed is also the author of other popular titles such as B is for Big Sky Country-A Montana Alphabet and a forthcoming novel for young adults entitled Dog Sense.
Sneed graduated with honors in marine biology from U.C. Berkeley and received a master's degree in scientific instrumentation from U.C. Santa Barbara. To research his books, Sneed draws heavily upon his experience and background as a scientist. He also often travels to the source. In the past ten years, he's been on research trips to Costa Rica, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Australia, and Bahamas. Most recently, he braved the wilds of Fort Benton to research a forthcoming picture book on Montana's most faithful dog, Shep.
