Search Help

All Resources or Search Library Resources: Combined search of the contents and titles of journal articles, books, newspapers, and magazines most of which are accessible through the collections of the Mansfield Library.

  • Phrase Searching: Use quotes around phrases; e.g. “teacher education”.
  • Refine your Search: Use the column on the left to narrow your search results.
    • Examples: Limit to articles from scholarly publications, including peer-review; select the content type; use subject terms.
  • Expand or narrow your search: Add the terms AND, OR, NOT in ALL CAPS.
  • Use the Advanced Search to search in specific fields of the records.
    • Examples: title, author, publication title, ISBN, etc.
  • Use the question mark (?) or asterisk (*) as wildcard or truncation symbols to replace characters at the end or within words.
    • Examples: 
      • The question mark (?) will match any one character and can be used to find “Olsen” or “Olson” by searching for “Ols?n”. Note you do not need to use parenthesis.
      • The asterisk (*) will match zero or more characters within a word or at the end of a word. A search for “Ch*ter” would match “Charter”, “Character”, and “Chapter”. When used at the end of a word, such as “Temp*”, it will match all suffixes “Temptation”, “Temple” and “Temporary”. Note you do not need to use parenthesis.

Catalog: Search of books and media in the Mansfield Library and its Affiliates.

  • Phrase Searching: Use quotes around phrases; e.g. “teacher education”.
  • Use the question mark (?) as the wildcard or truncation symbol at the end or within words.
    • Examples:
      • “litera? Criticism” for literature or literary paired with criticism
      • Wom?n  for woman or women
  • Use Catalog Advanced Search to:
    • combine terms with AND, OR, NOT
    • search in specific fields of the records; e.g. title, author, subject, ISBN, etc.
    • select specific formats; e.g. DVD, Score, etc.
    • identify specific publication dates
    • select the language
    • indicate the place of publication
    • search specific library collections; e.g., Missoula College, Mansfield Library’s Government Documents

Journal Titles: Search of journals and serial publications subscribed to by the Mansfield Library.

  • Enter the exact name of a journal; e.g. Journal of Biology
  • After your first search, use the pull-down menu to selectively search for:
    • Title contains all works; e.g. biology and life for Journal of Biology and Life Sciences
    • ISSN equals
  • After your first search, use the additional pull-down menu to browse journals by subject category.

  • Phrase Searching: Use quotes around phrases; e.g. “liaison librarians” to find Liaison Librarians by Department.

Note: Capitalization is not necessary in searching any of the resources.
