About the Collection
The US Forest Service Research Legacy Documents at the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library is a digitized selection of publications by research and development scientists of the US Forest Service under the research station names of the Rocky Mountain Forest and Range Experiment Station, the Intermountain Research Station, the Northern Rocky Mountain Forest Range Experiment Station, and the Intermountain Forest and Range Experiment Station. These full-text peer-reviewed works cover topics ranging from wilderness, wildlife, the environment, recreation, and more.
The goal of this project is to digitize legacy Forest Service research relevant to the Montana community. These works will be submitted to the USDA Forest Service's TreeSearch Database, as well as the Registry of U.S. Government Publication Digitization Projects.

The US Forest Service Research Legacy Documents collection has been scanned from the original documents at either 400 dpi at 8 bit gray scale or 600 dpi at 1 bit black and white. Scanners used for this project include the Epson 10000 XL, Microtek Opticbook 3600, and Xerox Workcentre Pro 275. Master images are stored in uncompressed TIFF format and converted to Adobe Acrobat PDF for viewing. Optical Character Recognition was accomplished using ABBYY FineReader version 8.0.
