Akkadian

updated 12-14-2001 Akkadian (Afro-Asiatic) belongs to the East Semitic sub-branch of the Semitic branch of the Afro-Asiatic family of languages. Akkadian was written in cunieform; writings are extant from about 2800 - 1 B.C. Babylonian and (Old) Assyrian are names of dialects. Aramaic

updated 12-18-2001 Aramaic (Afro-Asiatic) is a sub-branch of the Northern West Semitic sub-branch of the West Semitic sub-branch of the Semitic branch of the Afro-Asiatic family of languages. Aramaic may be further divided into West Aramaic which includes Biblical Aramaic and Samaritan, and East Aramaic, which includes Syriac. It is written with the Hebrew alphabet, and was the language of the country of Palestine at the time of Christ. Aramaic is still spoken in small communities in Syria and in Turkey. South Arabic
