Maori is one of the 2 official languages of New Zealand, the other being English. Maori is the language of the native inhabitants of New Zealand, most of whom live on New Zealand's North Island. updated 9-1-2003 Rapanui (Austric), also called Easter Island, belongs to the Polynesian sub-branch of the Austronesian branch of the Austric family of languages. Rapanui is spoken on the island of the same name, formerly called Easter Island, and also in Tahiti. A writing system called Rongorongo was invented and used on the island in the 1770s; by 1864, the natives could no longer read it.
