Athapaskan Languages

updated 5-2-2001 The Athapaskan languages (Nadene) comprise one branch of the Nadene family of languages. Other names for Athapaskan include Dene, Dinne, and Tinne; the latter is used by the Library of Congress. The Athapaskan languages include Beaver, Chipewyan (not to be confused with Chippewa, an alternate name for Ojibwa, which belongs to the Algonkian-Mosan language family), Dogrib, Hupa, Matole, and Sarsi, as well as the Apachean languages which include Apache and Navajo. Chipewyan

updated 7-29-2004 Chipewyan (Nadene) belongs to the Northern Athapaskan sub-branch of the Athapaskan branch of the Nadene family of languages. It is not to be confused with Chippewa, which is an alternate name for Ojibwa, a language belonging to the Algonkian-Mosan family.
