Old English

updated 7-30-2001 Old English (Indo-Hittite), formerly called Anglo-Saxon, belongs to the Ingweonic sub-branch of the West Germanic sub-branch of the Germanic sub-branch of the Indo-European branch of the Indo-Hittite family of languages. It is the oldest form of English, generally dated from the 6th century to 1100 A.D. There were three distinct dialects in Old English, all spoken in what is now England: Kentish, Saxon, and Anglian; the latter was also called Northern Old English. Saxon may be further divided into Old Saxon and West Saxon, while Anglican may be divided into Mercian and Northumbrian. Old English was usually written with the Latin alphabet, but sometimes with runes. 429 Andrew, Samuel Ogden, 1868- A563s Syntax and style in Old English RID: a40-3330 ITEM #: ang00001 745.670942889 Backhouse, Janet B126L The Lindisfarne Gospels. -- Ithaca, N.Y. : Cornell University Press, 1981.
