Miscellaneous languages are those not falling into any of the preceding groupings. Also included here is the category "Polyglot," for multilingual works. Please note that those languages which linguists are simply uncertain where to classify do not fall here, but under "Presently Unidentified Natural Languages," under "Natural Languages." Miscellaneous Languages
updated 10-30-2001 Indian Sign Language developed among the various Indian tribes of North America (most commonly among the Plains Indians), when they needed to communicate with one another but did not share a common language. It was a system of hand-shapes and movements that conveyed the message visually. It is entirely different from the Sign Language of the Deaf, although some studies have compared the two. Early White scouts and trappers mastered Indian Sign Language to varying degrees, thus enabling them to also communicate with some Indians. Besides hand signs, American Indians also used picture-writing. (Early forms are often called "pictographs," although they are generally much later than pictographs found in Europe). Additionally, they employed smoke signals, trail markers, the "language of feathers," the "language of blankets," and specialized ways of painting their bodies to convey meaning. Today Boy Scouts often learn Indian signs as part of their training in tracking and following a trail, as well as a fun alternate to spoken communication. 970.6 Amon, Aline Children Talking hands : Indian sign language. -- Garden City, N.Y. : Doubleday, 1968.
