updated 4-4-2001 The Mayan languages (Macro-Penutian) comprise one branch of the Macro-Penutian family of languages. There are numerous Mayan languages, divided among many sub-branches. The major sub-branches of Mayan are Main Mayan, Huastecan, Yucatecan, and Chipaya-Uru. Such languages as Chol, Tzeltal, Jacaltec, Kekchi, Pocoman, Cakchiquel, Mam, Quiche, and Kanjobal are all Mayan. Today the Mayan languages are spoken in Mexico and Central America. Prior to the coming of the Europeans, Mayan civilization had reached a high level, complete with a complicated hieroglyphic writing system which only today is beginning to be interpreted. The Popul Vuh was the sacred book of the Mayans, and was originally written in Mayan hieroglyphics; it was transliterated into the Latin alphabet in the 16th century. Some scholars now believe that the Toltec people spoke a Mayan language. For specific Mayan languages, choose Chontal, Huastec, Jacaltec, Mam, Quiche, or Yucatec. Mayan Languages
