updated 12-10-2003 "Philippine languages" (Austric) is a term covering all the native languages spoken in the Philippines. Included are Tagalog (also called Pilipino, and Filipino, which is the national language of the Philippines), the Visayan languages: Cebuano, Hiligaynon, and Samaran; Ilocano, Bikol, Pampangan, Pangasinian, Igorot, Maranao, and a number of minor languages. All of these belong to the Malayan sub-branch of the Austronesian branch of the Austric family of languages. English, Spanish, and Arabic, as well as other languages, are also spoken today in the Phillipines. Historically, a script called Alibata (or Babayin) came into use about 1000-1200 A.D. and was used to write Tagalog, the Visayan languages, Pampangan, Pangasinian, and Ilocano. In the early part of the Spanish colonial period, it was also used to write Spanish. It mostly fell into disuse in the 18th century, although it is still used by the Tagbuanawa people on Palawan and the Mangyan of Mindoro; additionally, modern Philippine youth have rediscovered it and are using it to show their ethnic heritage. Except for the latter use, the modern Philippine languages are written with the Latin alphabet. 973.049921 Bautista, Veltisezar B., 1933- B352f The Filipino Americans. -- [S.l.] : Bookhaus Pub., 1998 RID: 98-72131 ITEM #: tag00008 499.21 Longacre, Robert E., ed.
