Literary languages are those invented by literary authors. They may be fully developed or only hinted at in the authors' works. Most are spoken by one or more characters in their stories, while others are only mentioned in passing. They may or may not bear any apparent relation to any natural language. Some may be later augmented by other writers.

updated 10-1-2001 Darkovan is the name used among Terrans for the languages spoken by the natives of the planet invented by Marion Zimmer Bradley and known officially as Cottman IV, but commonly called "Darkover." There are actually 4 native languages on Darkover (not counting those of the non-human races), but Terrans tend to lump them all together as "Darkovan." Casta is the language of the aristocracy, and has elements of English, Gaelic, Spanish and Portuguese in it. The common folk speak Cahuenga, which is also used as a lingua franca between Terran Standard (21st-century English) and Casta. The Dry-Towners have a language of their own, called Dry-Town (which is thick with Gaelic), while the residents of the mountainous Hellers region speak Montagnois. Non-human races include the Chieri and the Trailmen, each of whom have their own language. Bradley has allowed other writers to write tales set in her universe, and some of these writers have also added to the language(s), most notably John Shimwell and myself (Elaine Higgins). 813.54 Bradley, Marion Zimmer, 1930- B811c Children of Hastur. -- Garden City, N.Y. : RID: wln82-132240 ITEM #: dar00001 813.54 Bradley, Marion Zimmer B811o Oath of the Renunciates. -- Garden City, N.Y. : RID: wln85-8966 ITEM #: dar00002 813.54 Bradley, Marion Zimmer B811st Star of danger. -- New York : RID: wln86-161768 ITEM #: dar00003 Darkovan
updated 10-1-2001 Assorted authors have written about elves, but J.R.R. Tolkien invented 2 varieties of Elven language, Quenya (or "High Elvish") and Sindarin (the language of the "Grey Elves"). In fact, he claimed to have written The Lord of the Rings and other tales only as an extension of his language studies! Tolkien also developed 2 writing systems for Elvish, called Tengwar ("letters") and Cirth or Certar ("runes"). He also created portions of Dwarvish and Orcan speech, as well as others. He called human speech, which his "hobbit" characters also spoke, "Common," "Westron," or "Mannish." 823.912 Grotta, Daniel, 1944- G649Zg The biography of J. R. R. updated 10-1-2001 The "Old Tongue" is the language spoken during the "Age of Legends" in the Wheel of Time series of books by Robert Jordan. He says of it: "It is generally expected that nobles and the educated will have learned to speak it, but most know only a few words. Translation is often difficult, as it is a language capable of many subtly different meanings." Some words appear similar to Indo-European words, while others do not. 813.54 Jordan, Robert.
