Persian

updated 4-2-2001 Persian (Indo-Hittite) belongs to the Iranian sub-branch of the Indo- Iranian sub-branch of the Indo-European branch of the Indo-Hittite family of languages. Persian is the language of the country of Iran; it is also spoken in Afghanistan. Native speakers call their language Farsi. Persian is also sometimes called Iranian, but Iranian is properly the name of the sub-branch of languages to which Persian belongs. Iraqi is a dialect of Persian. The Qashqa'i tribal people use Persian words as well as Turkish and Arabic ones along with their own language. Old Persian (ca. 600-300 B.C.) was written with Cunieform characters. A Persian alphabet was created in the 2nd century B.C., but this was replaced by Arabic script at the time of the Islamic conquest. Today Persian is written in Persi-Arabic script, a variation of Arabic script. 955.054 Abrahamian, Ervand, 1940- A159k Khomeinism : essays on the Islamic Republic. -- Berkeley : University of California Press, 1993. updated 2-9-2007 Prakrits (Indo-Hittite), or Prakrit, is Middle Indic. As such, it belongs to the Indic sub-branch of the Indo-Iranian sub-branch of the Indo-European branch of the Indo-Hittite family of languages. There are actually a number of dialects, but all of them are grouped together here. It is the form of the language which developed from the older Sanskrit, and is sometimes called Colloquial Sanskrit. It is also sometimes called Bhandira.
