Gur and Kwa are two of the sub-branches of the Western Sudanic sub-branch of the Niger- Congo branch of the Niger-Kordofanian family of languages. updated 1-16-2004 Akan (Niger-Kordofanian) belongs to the Kwa sub-branch of the Western Sudanic sub-branch of the Niger-Congo branch of the Niger-Kordofanian family of languages. A number of dialects comprise Akan; some of these are often thought of as separate languages. Among these dialects are Ashanti (also spelled Asante, and also called Twi -- not to be confused with the Twi dialect of Dinka, a Nilo-Saharan language) and Fanti (also spelled Fante).
