updated 11-8-2000 Vietnamese (Austric), also called Annamese, belongs to the Vietnamese-Muong group of languages. Many linguists now consider this group to be a sub-branch of the Austroasiatic branch of the Austric family of languages. Classification of Vietnamese has been complicated by the fact that nearly half of its vocabulary is borrowed from Chinese. Vietnamese is spoken in both North and South Vietnam. It is written with the Latin alphabet, using a system developed in the 17th century by Catholic missionaries. Some diacritical marks indicate certain vowel sounds while other indicate tone; thus a single letter in Vietnamese may have two diacritics. 495.922321 Can, Gian Huu C212e English Vietnamese, Vietnamese English dictionary 1992 = Anh-Viet, Viet-Anh. -- Rev. ed. -- New Delhi : 1992.
