updated 1-6-2003 Apache (Nadene), also called Apache Proper to distinguish it from the other Apachean languages, belongs to the Western Apachean sub-branch of the Apachean sub-branch of the Athapaskan branch of the Nadene family of languages. Coyotero is another name for Apache. It is spoken in Arizona, and has the following dialects: White Mountain Apache, San Carlos Apache, Cibucue, and Tonto. updated 11-3-2000 Navajo (Nadene), also spelled Navaho, belongs to the Western Apachean sub- branch of the Apachean sub-branch of the Athapaskan branch of the Nadene family of languages. The Navajo are the largest Indian tribe in the United States, with most living on their vast reservation in New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. During World War II, a code based on Navajo was developed by some Navajo soldiers and used by the Allies; it was never broken. The Navajo call themselves "Dine," which means "The People."
