The Khoisan and Nilo-Saharan language families are both included on this page.
updated 12-24-2001 The Khoisan family was formerly called Bushmen-Hottentot. It consists of languages spoken in southern Africa. Khoisan includes Khoi (formerly Hottentot), Hatsa, San (formerly Bushmen), Sandawe, Nama, Xam, and other languages. Khoi is spoken in Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. Hatsa - also called Hadzapi - is spoken in Tanzania. Sandawe is also spoken in Tanzania. San is spoken in Namibia. Nama and Xam are spoken in South Africa. The name Khoisan is composed of the San words for "San" and "Khoi." The Khoisan languages have distinctive "click" consonants, sometimes represented in writing by an exclamation point preceding the letter. Khoisan

Languages belonging to the Nilo-Saharan family of languages are spoken in Africa. The Nilo-Saharan family has the following branches: Chari-Nile, Saharan, Maban, Forian, Songhai, and Djerma. The Chari-Nile branch is further divided into the Eastern Sudanic and Central Sudanic branches, with Eastern Sudanic being divided into Nubian and Nilotic. Dinka, Nuer, and Masai are among the Nilotic languages.
updated 7-27-2004 Dinka (Nilo-Saharan) belongs to the Western Nilotic sub-branch of the Nilotic sub-branch of the Eastern Sudanic sub-branch of the Chari-Nile branch of the Nilo- Saharan family of languages. There is a dialect called Twi -- not to be confused with the Twi dialect (also called Asante) of Akan, a language belonging to the Niger- Kordofanian family.
