updated 10-1-2001 Chinook Jargon originally developed as a jargon among the Northern Pacific coast fur-traders. It is made up of words from the Chinookan, Salishan, Wakashan, and Sahaptian groups of American Indian languages, as well as both French and English. By the 1890's, it was recognized as a trade language or "international idiom," being widely used for communication among Indians whose native languages differed, and with their Caucasian neighbors in British Columbia and elsewhere in Canada and the Pacific Northwest.. Pere LeJeune published a journal called Chinook Jargon written in what he called "stenographic characters," which resemble Gregg shorthand. Chinook Jargon is also called simply, "Jargon." Chinook Jargon is not to be confused with Chinookan, a branch of the Macro-Penutin family of languages. 497 Gibbs, George, 1815-1873 G442d Dictionary of the Chinook jargon, or trade language of Oregon. - New York : Cramoisy Press, 1863 RID: wln92-324479 ITEM #: chn00008 M Gill, John Kaye, comp. 497.4 Gill's dictionary of the Chinook jargon G475d RID: 09-8772 ITEM #: chn00001 M Long, Frederick J., comp. 497.4 Dictionary of the Chinook ...
