Javanese
updated 3-13-2002
Javanese (Austric) belongs to the Malayan sub-branch of the Austronesian
branch of the Austric family of languages. Javanese is spoken on the island of Java,
part of the country of Indonesia. Javanese is traditionally written with its own Javanese
script, called Jawi, which was brought to Java from southern India over a thousand years
ago. Today the Latin alphabet is also used to write Javanese. Javanese is not to be
confused with the computer language called Java.
