What follows is an alphabetical index to languages of all types. Originally envisioned as an index to "Language Finger," a blbilographic finding aid to the works in theMansfield Library at the University of Montana which are in or about a language other than Modern English, it has been expanded to include many languages not found in "Language Finger." There are also numerous cross-references.
In the case of natural languages especially, the attempt has been made to be as all-inclusive as possible. Branches of language families are included as well as individual languages. Natural language names direct the user to the family to which that language belongs genetically. Thus due to its arrangement, the index may also serve as an indicator of language relationships.
Languages not part of a natural language family have listings in ALL CAPS in the "Family or Type" column. (D) after a language name indicates a dialect, although not all dialects are so marked.
Arrangement is word-by-word.
Numerous cross-references are included since many language names are similar to one another.
It is highly recommended that one use this Comprehensive Language Index each time one searches for materials in or about a different language in "Language Finger."
Languages and cross-references are listed alphabetically; choose the first letter below to go directly to the part of the index wanted. Find the name of the language you are interested in. If a language name is highlighted, you may click on it to go directly there. Or if a language family name is given under "Family or Type," you may return to the introductory page and then choose that family, under "Natural Languages." Doing so will give you a list of all the languages projected to be added to this site under that family. Only those highlighted are currently available for searching.
