updated 3-29-2002 Breton (Indo-Hittite) belongs to the Brythonic sub-branch of the Celtic sub-branch of the Indo-European branch of the Indo-Hittite family of languages. Breton is the only Celtic language now spoken on the mainland of Europe. It was carried there by emigrants from England. It is spoken in Brittany, along the northwestern coastal area of France. updated 7-18-2001 The Celtic languages (Indo-Hittite) comprise one sub-branch of the Indo-European branch of the Indo-Hittite family of languages. The Celtic sub-branch is further divided into the Brythonic (sometimes now called "Brittonic") and Goidelic (sometimes now "Gaelic") sub-branches. Breton, Cornish, Gaulish, and Welsh are the Brythonic languages, while Manx and Irish, the latter with its off-shoot of Scots Gaelic, are the Goidelic languages. Included here are works which cover more than one Celtic language, or in which the individual language cannot be further determined. updated 8-17-2004 Gaulish (Indo-Hittite) belongs to the Brythonic sub-branch of the Celtic sub-branch of the Indo-European branch of the Indo-Hittite family of languages. Gaulish was spoken in the area known as Gaul, until it gave way to the Latin of the Romans. Gaulish is known only from names and inscriptions. Irish is spoken in the country of Ireland; there is a national effort to increase its use. Although really more of a dialect of Irish, it is regarded by some as a separate language and is so treated herein. Written with the Latin alphabet, Scots Gaelic is spoken mostly in the highlands of Scotland.
