The Mike Mansfield Papers: Series Notes
Series XXX: Ambassador: General Correspondence, 1977-1988 (21 linear ft.)
This series consists of Mansfield's correspondence during his ambassadorship, and includes mostly letters to and from US congressmen; embassy associates; constituents about concerns; businesses; and people in Montana. The letters are generally personal, not form, letters, and a carbon copy of Mansfield's reply is usually included. Most materials are in English, but there are a few things in Japanese.
Materials are arranged chronologically, then alphabetically within years. Letters are alphabetical by correspondent name in most folders; the full name of the correspondent was typed on the long edge of the letter by Mansfield's staff for easy location of individual pieces.
See a sample document from this series: Letter of thanks, University of Montana president Neil S. Bucklew, for donation of ambassadorial papers to the K. Ross Toole Archives at the Mansfield Library.
