Policies
Policy on research requests
Archives & Special Collections accepts research requests by telephone, mail, and email, as well as from patrons who visit us in person. The department has a small staff and we typically can only perform 30-45 minutes of research per request. Requests are serviced in the order in which they are received and the vast majority of our requests are answered in two to three business days. Please be as specific as possible with your request so that we can answer you to the best of our abilities. See our contact page to submit a request.
Policy on digital camera use
Digital cameras may be used to take pictures of Archives & Special Collections materials for personal use, study, or classroom use. A Camera Use form is required and is available at the Archives & Special Collections Reading Room reference desk.
Policy on patrons bringing their own scanners
We do not allow patrons to bring their own scanners for use with our materials, but you may use a digital camera to photograph our materials (see policy above). We do offer photocopies and reproductions of our materials. See our purchasing reproductions page for information.
Policy on reproductions of our materials
We offer photocopy service and will reproduce prints and scans of our images. View our purchasing reproductions page for information. Please note that reproduction requests may be denied for items considered too fragile to copy without causing damage to the original.
Permissions, Citations and Credit
Securing permission to display or publish images
Archives & Special Collections encourages use of our materials in publications, exhibits, video and other formats and venues. However, we do require that a Permission to Use form be signed and returned to us before publication or public use. Please feel free to contact us with questions.
Citation and credit information
Any items used from our collections should be accompanied by an appropriate credit line based on the following model:
[item/image description], [collection name or photographer (if known)], Archives & Special Collections, Mansfield Library, The University of Montana-Missoula
Credits should appear in close proximity to the image or in a special section devoted to credits. For more information about citing sources from Archives & Special Collections view our Citation Examples or visit the library's Citation Guide.
