Mansfield Library Research Scholarships

The Mansfield Library Research Scholarships recognize outstanding scholarly research using primary-source materials held in the Archives & Special Collections, Government Documents and Maps collections of the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library. Two awards of up to $1500 will be given each January – one to an undergraduate student and one to a graduate student.

The competition is open to all enrolled students of The University of Montana, including the campuses at Missoula, Butte, Dillon, and Helena, but the scholarship must be used for tuition and fees at the Missoula campus.

Papers and projects may be on any topic and produced by students in any discipline, but must incorporate primary sources from Archives and Special Collections (including the Montana Room), Maps, and / or the Government Documents collections of the Mansfield Library. These collections include maps, photographs, reports, oral histories, unpublished writings and documents, business records, and publications of state and federal government agencies.

Papers must be typed, double-spaced, unbound, and conform to the style manual appropriate to the discipline in which they are written. The required length is 15-25 pages of text, not including endnotes. Documentary productions may not exceed one hour in length and should be submitted on a DVD. Co-authored or co-produced papers or productions will be accepted, but all authors must be enrolled University of Montana students and the award will be split among the authors. Combined submissions by undergraduates and graduates will be judged in the graduate category.

Papers and other projects will be reviewed and judged by a jury composed of library and teaching faculty. The jury will evaluate papers and projects according to the following criteria, in order of importance:

1. Quality of research (originality, quality, use of analysis);
2. Use of primary source resources from the Mansfield Library’s Archives & Special   Collections, Government Documents, and / or Maps collections;
3. Clarity of presentation.

Papers with substantial analysis rather than simple narrative will receive higher scores. It is strongly recommended that students consult with a faculty advisor or sponsor regarding topic and presentation.

All winning papers and other projects will be placed in the collections of the Mansfield Library.

Applications (paper or project) must be received in the Mansfield Library's Administrative Office no later than 5pm on Wednesday December 9, 2009. The applicant's name, address and contact phone number must be placed on a cover page but not appear on other locations of the paper / project to facilitate a blind review by the jury. The applicant’s status on the date of the application submission (undergraduate or graduate) must be noted on the cover page.
