Cataloging and Metadata Services

Cataloging and Metadata Services processes several thousand items in many different formats and languages each month. Every item receives a cataloging record in Montana University System’s on-line bibliographic database that accurately describes the items and reflects its subject content. With over 1 million volumes in the Libraries' collections, the electronic entries ensure that users can quickly find, identify, select, and obtain what they are seeking, whether it be the most recent ground-water data on CD-ROM issued by the U.S. Geological Survey, a video-cassette on auto shop safety, or a limited edition of Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, autographed by the illustrator.

Given leadership and direction by the Head of Bibliographic Management Services, and the Acquisitions and E-Resources Management Librarian, Cataloging and Metadata Services consists of six teams:

  • Government Documents/Maps Team provides cataloging for all federal government documents maps and atlases, regardless of format.
  • Metadata Team provides metadata creation, development and design for digital collections within the Mansfield Library and the State of Montana
  • Monographs Team is responsible for cataloging all monographic books and reproductions of monographic books, excluding rare materials.
  • Music/Media Team catalogs scores, recorded music, and all audio-visual items.
  • Continuing Resources Team provides cataloging for all serial and periodical items held by the University Libraries
  • Special Collections Team works closely with the Archives and Special Collections Department faculty and staff to provide quality cataloging for rare materials, archival and special collections.

Cataloging and Metadata Services provides bibliographic description and maintenance for materials housed at the Mansfield Library, the Flathead Lake Biological Station, the  Missoula College University of Montana Library, and the Herbarium. Additionally we provide support and assistance for the William J. Jameson Law Library at The University of Montana School of Law, 3 affiliate campus libraries (The Helena College University of Montana, Montana Tech of The University of Montana (Butte), The University of Montana-Western: Lucy Carson Library (Dillon)) and 2 non-state funded institutions (Salish Kootenai College and St. Patrick’s Hospital Library).
